Frequently asked questions
What do I need to run Discovery Triage?
A Mac running macOS 26 or later. AI review additionally needs a Mac with Apple silicon that supports Apple Intelligence, with Apple Intelligence turned on in System Settings and a language and region it supports. Everything except AI review works without it.
How do I set up Apple Intelligence?
Open System Settings, choose Apple Intelligence & Siri, and turn on Apple Intelligence. The first download can take a while. If AI review is unavailable, Discovery Triage tells you the reason and offers a button to open Settings.
What is free and what needs a subscription?
Projects of up to 500 documents are free, with every feature included. Larger projects need a subscription (monthly or yearly) bought through the Mac App Store. Current prices are in the pricing section and in the app. If a subscription lapses, projects over 500 documents stay viewable, searchable and backup-able, and completed productions can be re-exported. Adding documents, coding, AI review and new productions need an active subscription.
How do I restore a purchase, or manage or cancel my subscription?
In the app, choose Subscribe… (or Manage Subscription…) from the app menu or the Help menu, then use Restore Purchases or Manage Subscription. You can also manage or cancel at any time at apps.apple.com/account/subscriptions. Billing is handled by Apple.
Where is my data stored?
On your Mac, in the app's sandbox container, unless you chose another folder: ~/Library/Containers/com.westriverdatasystems.discoverytriage/Data/Documents/Discovery Triage Projects/<project name>/. Imported files are copied into the project; your originals are never modified. Nothing is uploaded.
How do I back up a project or move to a new Mac?
Open the project and choose File > Back Up Project… (Option-Command-B). On the new Mac, install the app and choose File > Restore Project from Backup…. The container is also included in Time Machine by default; encrypt any backup disk that holds client data. Your subscription belongs to your Apple ID, so sign in with the same one and use Restore Purchases.
Try it with a sample case
Download the sample case (zip, 1 MB). It is a made-up construction dispute with 116 documents once everything is opened up: email with attachments, an mbox, PDFs, a scanned receipt and photos that need OCR, Word, Excel and RTF files, a zip, and duplicates. Everything in it is fictional. Unzip it, create a project, import the Documents folder and follow READ ME FIRST.txt. It is well inside the free tier of 500 documents, so nothing needs to be bought. AI review in the walkthrough is optional and needs Apple Intelligence; everything else works without it.
Which files can I import? What about 7z and RAR?
PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, RTF, PST/OST (Unicode format), MSG, EML, mbox, winmail.dat, images (with OCR), plain-text formats, and ZIP, TAR and TAR.GZ (.tgz) archives. 7z and RAR archives are not supported for now: extract them first with an archive utility, then import the folder. Audio and video files are indexed by metadata only; transcription is a separate app, Soundproof Legal.
How do I uninstall the app and delete my data?
Dragging the app to the Trash does not delete project data. Quit the app, delete the project folders under ~/Library/Containers/com.westriverdatasystems.discoverytriage/Data/Documents/Discovery Triage Projects/ (or the whole com.westriverdatasystems.discoverytriage container folder), delete any project stored in a location you chose, delete your exports, and empty the Trash. Remove Time Machine copies if your policy requires it. Use FileVault; overwrite-based secure erase is unreliable on SSDs.
What is the audit log and how do I verify it?
Coding, tags, AI runs, productions, exports and backups are recorded in a hash-chained log. Choose View > Audit Log… (Option-Command-L) and click Verify integrity to check the chain. You can export the log as CSV or JSON; the export includes the hashes so it can be checked independently. The log is tamper-evident, not tamper-proof: it shows whether the record was altered, it cannot prevent it.
